1- Jeanette Epps, a NASA astronaut, is predicting into becoming the first Black woman to live on the International Space Station for months at a time. This achievement will be a symbol of the inclusion of women and marginalized groups within NASA. In 2018, “Epps was slated to fly on the Russian Soyuz rocket to the ISS, but was replaced by Serena Auñón-Chancellor. Jeanette Epps, a former CIA agent prior to “becoming a member of the 2009 astronaut class”, has worked with Boeing and Elon Musk’s “SpaceX”. Diversity within organizations also requires for employers and corporations to have effective communication skills, an important communication skill. “As the world grows smaller and our society becomes more diverse, employers are more apt to view people who lack skills in this area as liabilities” (Bucher 145). It is important to be open-minded, address people the way that they want to be addressed, and to listen actively. It is important to not judge a person’s preferences and assume how they’d like to be addressed. These skills are important within corporations with women and other underrepresented groups within their workforce.
2-This week’s diversity post comes from the third report in the McKinsey series. The Mckinsey series is a report that investigate the business case for diversity to see why diversity matters. The report looks at a variety of data sets and examine the relationship between diversity on executives’ teams and the likelihood of financial outperformance if it is strengthened over time. One interesting finding was that companies that had more women on their executives’ team outperformed companies that had fewer woman on their executive team. This report definitely corresponds with what our text is pointing out the importance of diversity consciousness. That it can “enhance diversity skills such as teamwork and the ability recognize and respect diverse intellectual strengths and learning styles (bucher). Hence, it is important to know that diversity consciousness does not just pertains to individuals but also to organizations. Having diversity on an executive team can increase the likelihood of out performance.
