Purpose

The purpose of the Informative Speech is to choose a topic that interests

you and that you’d like to teach your classmates and instructors about. The

idea behind informative speaking is that you’ll be teaching us something

that you find cool and interesting about the world. You will not be

describing problems that exist in society, nor will you be attempting to

make changes in the world. Those kinds of topics are better suited for

persuasive speaking.

) you have chosen and present it using the principles we

discuss from the textbook and in class.

D.

Tattoos in the past had negative perceptions and weren’t as accepted as they are

now.

E.

Today I will be sharing why people get tattoos, the negative attitudes towards

those who have tattoos, and the positive impacts tattoos have on people.

Transition:

The first thing I will talk about is why people get tattoos.

II.

Body

A.

Why do people get tattoos?

1.

People get tattoos because it increases self-esteem

By getting something you want put onto your body is a

sense of control over yourself. It can allow you to reclaim

something that has been lost or taken. Some hope that by

getting a tattoo it will make them more attractive and

people will notice them more. A tattoo is a piece of art that

becomes part of the owner’s body.

In Jordan Ball and Elsner Roberts study “Tattoos

Increase Self-Esteem Among College Students”

which was published in September 2019, it was

stated that “[t]attoos can be viewed as a self-

directed identity claim; these claims are physical

manifestations of who an individual views

themselves to be.”

2.

Another reason why people get tattoos is because it helps them

identify as a person.

It brings them a sense of belonging. For example, many

soldiers get tattoos as well because it gives them a sense of

pride and it becomes a way to remember their fallen

brothers and a way to remember the tragic events.

According to a post on the US Army’s official website,

they estimate that around

90% of all soldiers

have at least

one tattoo.

Transition:

I just explained why people get tattoos and now I am going to talk about the

negative attitudes towards tattoos.

B.

Negative Attitudes Towards Tattoos

1.

Tattoos for many years now have had a bad reputation. If you have

one, some may say you are defiant and engage in “risk taking”

behavior. Or some may think you have low self esteem.

According to Andrew Timming and David Perretts “Trust

and mixed signals: A study of religion, tattoos, and

cognitive dissonance“ from July 2016, they stated that

“[b]ody art, for example, is correlated with risk-taking

behaviors such as drug use and violence, perceptions of

reduced mental health, physiological illness, criminal

delinquency, and among other undesirable outcomes.”

Older generations’ perception of tattooing can be

explained by their idea of traditional

characterizations of tattooing. When individuals of

the older generations were the same age as today’s

youth, tattooing was perceived as a deviant practice.

2.

Among many religions, social groups, and other people they

believe that by having tattoos will lower your chances of getting a

good job.

In Sharron Lennon and Kim Johnsons “Tattoos as a form of

dress: A review(2000-18)” from March 2019, they stated

“[p]erhaps this unwillingness to hire visibly tattooed people

is tied to concerns that impressions of tattooed workers

negatively on the company and impact company success”.

By having tattoos show, it can reflect negatively on

the company. The customers might think the

company does not care.

Transition:

I explained why people get tattoos and the negative attitudes towards tattoos, so

now I will talk about the positive impacts tattoos have on people.

C.

Positive Impacts Tattoos Have on People

1.

As I stated before, people become more confident once they get a

tattoo. Some tattoos are hidden from the public eye but some are

not, and those can be complemented. An outsider can view a

person with tattoos as a confident person.

In Semino Kertzman and her colleagues research article

“Do Young Women with Tattoos Have Lower Self-Esteem

and Body Image than Their Peers without Tattoos?” which

was published in January 2019, they stated “[s]ome people

perceive tattooed individuals as immoral, crude, unstable,

undesirable and foolish, while others consider them

appealing, interesting,unique, self-confident, desirable and

progessive.”

Not only is the tattoo helping the individual become

more confident in themselves, but others as well. By

complimenting someone on their tattoo, could help

them as well. They will take pride in knowing that

others like their tattoos.

2.

By getting a tattoo it is enhancing their body image. They are able

to express what they want on their body. The tattoo can have

significant meaning or no meaning at all. Some simply just get a

tattoo just to get one.

In Colin Zestcotts study “What do you think about ink? An

examination of implicit and explicit attitudes toward

tattooed indiciduals” which was published in January 2018,

it was stated that “[i]ndividuals with tattoos view tattooing

as an important means of self-expression.”

According to the Collins Dictionary self-expression

is defined as “the expression of your

personality,

feelings, or opinions, for example through an

artistic activity such as drawing or dancing”. They

use their bodies as a canvas to tell a story that their

words can’t capture.

Transition:

Today I explained why people get tattoos, the negative attitudes towards tattoos,

and the positive impacts tattoos have on people.

III.

Conclusion

A.

Same as transition

B.

People get tattoos because it increases self-esteem and it brings them a sense of

belonging, and it also gives them a way to express themselves. However, along

with having tattoos they also bring negative emotions and comments from others.
