Background: Even professional writers create their work in stages, beginning with brainstorming and often moving through several drafts. This week’s writing exercise will invite you to create your first draft of the essay.
Instructions: Write a full, five-paragraph draft of an essay that addresses the topic of technology in your life as it relates to this prompt.
Prompt: When Abraham Lincoln was a boy, he expanded his world through reading books by the light of a log fire. In contrast, you have access to all kinds of technology, including television, smartphones, tablets, and computers. Explain in detail three ways that technology has been an influence in your daily life. How has it been of value to you? What has it made possible for you? Include a closing thought about whether all this technology has been more of a help or a hindrance (adapted from page 226).
Using the information from our previous lessons, ensure that this draft includes the following elements:
an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement (1 paragraph)
three supporting paragraphs (3 paragraphs)
a conclusion (1 paragraph)

You are encouraged to avoid using quotes in your essay. However, if you use them, any material (others words) you use must be quoted and cited appropriately,
with no more than four short (i.e., two lines or less) quotes appearing throughout the entire essay. You must also identify the source of the quote right after it, by putting the author’s name and/or title of the course in parentheses. The best strategy is to simply use your own words and ideas in the essay.
- The student’s draft includes an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement. (1 point)
- The student’s draft includes three separate supporting paragraphs. The content in these paragraphs supports the thesis statement. (3 points)
- The student’s draft includes a closing thought about whether all this technology has been more of a help or a hindrance. (1 point)
- The student’s draft either does not include any quoted or paraphrased information or clearly includes the source information for any quoted or paraphrased information. There is absolutely no confusion about what the student has written in his or her original words versus what the student has taken from a source. (2.5 points)
