AC 217: Instructions for the Analytical Essay
‘Analysis of a Person’:
Write a 700-word description of an interesting and/or important person in your life—someone you know directly, or have known—not a character in a story, not an historical figure or celebrity. It must be a person in/from your own daily life.
Organize your description according to the following 5-paragraph structure of a short, factual essay:
Paragraph 1: Introduction and thesis statement, in which you state three main, important characteristics of the person, which you will focus on in the body of your essay.
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4: Description of the three main characteristics, one per paragraph, each supported with one or two proofs or specific examples of that characteristic from the person’s life.
Paragraph 5: Closing remarks, in which you can review your main points, but should also try to leave the reader with some final, interesting thought(s).
Note these additional instructions:
a) Be sure to include both positive and negative characteristics of the person you’re describing. Therefore your essay will have either two positive characteristics + one negative, or one positive characteristic + two negative.
b) Use full-sentence, full-paragraph form throughout your essay. Proofread carefully for spelling, grammar, and word choice.
c) Include a short, interesting title at the start, with its main words capitalized – along with your name at the top of the first page.
d) Double-space your essay (so I have room to write comments and corrections).
e) Submit your essay via email as a Word document attachment (not PDF) to HYPERLINK “mailto:email@example.com” firstname.lastname@example.org, no later than noon, Saturday, Sept. 26th, 2020.
