Case Study 1: Reese
Reese is a 7-year-old boy in the first grade who was adopted by his parents when he was 2 years old. His mother recently reached out to a therapist about some problems he was having at school and at home. When asked by the therapist to describe Reese, his mom described him as a fussy child. His sleep was often restless, and he often woke up screaming or crying from nightmares. He had always had difficulty following directions at home and was easily distracted. He even had trouble following established household routines, such as meal times and bath time. He also would engage in aggressive behaviors and frequently throw temper tantrums. His temper tantrums would usually come out of nowhere. His mom described frequent incidents where he would be eating or playing and would suddenly throw a tantrum. During his tantrums, he would be inconsolable. His parents also reported that he would frequently engage in dangerous activities like climbing up stair railings, countertops or turning on the stove even when repeatedly told not to. When Reese began kindergarten, his teacher repeatedly contacted his parents about his behavior in the classroom. He would leave his seat or talk without permission. During group activities, he had trouble waiting for his turn. He would also often abandon a task halfway to join another group and start on a new task. During quiet times, he would excessively fidget and often be unable to take part in the activity. Reese also had a hard time paying attention in class and would often be staring outside the window. He also had difficulty making friends because he would deliberately destroy his classmates work or bully them. Although Reeses IQ was placed at 120, he did not perform very well on reading and math achievement tests. Even though he seems to understand the concepts, he would lose points because of careless errors. Reese often either fails to bring his schoolwork to turn in or forgets to complete his assignments. With the end of the school year approaching, his teachers are reluctant to advance him to first grade since he doesnt seem to be improving.
