A Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach recognizes that good health comes from a collaboration of all aspects of the human experience, not just from healthcare. Factors like our jobs, recreational areas, and the place where we live also affect our health and often should be considered holistically when evaluating health policies. The concept of HiAP suggests that in order to maximize the health of a population, recommendations for policy improvement should transcend healthcare and encompass multiple settings (CDC, 2015). Because the health concerns affecting most people are often multifactorial in cause, a HiAP would be beneficial because it simultaneously addresses various factors. It is superior to traditional healthcare because healthcare typically addresses the condition but not contributing factors. For instance, in conventional healthcare, asthma is managed with medications. However, a HiAP approach would address additional factors like ambient air quality from pollution, cigarette smoking policies, indoor air quality, personal protective equipment at work for certain occupations, and even new waste management strategies. Another benefit of HiAP is that it improves an entire population’s health rather than focusing on individual services.

Californians’ major challenge during their initial experiences hen initiating HiAP was the enduring effects of previously established laws and policies that perpetuated systemic health inequities. They learned that future laws must both counteract old, harmful laws and observe healthy equity principles moving forward. In 2014 the Seattle/King County Health Department in Washington State executed another example of HiAP when they issued a multiagency task force and established 14 observable determinants of equity and health. The ordinance ensures increased access to walking trails, more progressive school discipline policies, employment programs for felons and low-income citizens, and healthier transportation plans.
