As Schiavo explains, there are differences between outcome objectives and communication objectives. Objectives are the stages that lead to the achievement of a specific goal. According to Schiavo, both outcome objectives and communication objectives should be “specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely” (2014). Communication objectives will help define an audience, describe how the audience will change their behaviors and attitudes, and determine how long it will take for them to change, and explain how much change will occur (Schiavo, 2014).

Outcome objectives are different from communication objectives. Outcome objectives determine the program’s desired effect and focus on what the audience will understand and accomplish when implemented (Schiavo, 2014).

In planning a diabetes prevention program for adult males between the ages of 25 to 45, some of the outcome objectives would be to help these men to develop a desire to perform daily physical activity, find ways to eat healthier diets, and obtain and maintain a healthy goal weight.

One of the communication objectives could be for participants to understand and define normal blood glucose levels and explain the importance of maintaining healthy levels. Other communication objectives can be for the men to communicate their needs with their healthcare providers and specify a goal weight to achieve within the next year.
