DB 3; the Wealthy

This is a difficult question to break apart. First of all, I do not believe that it should be considered a bad thing that a massive amount of wealth across the world has been amalgamated into the possession of multinational corporations. I believe this question has a synonymous theme as one of our previous Discussion Board Forums—Is business activity good, bad, or neutral? It is my opinion, that what these large, multinational corporations do with the large amounts of cash reserves that determines if it is a good or bad thing. Money itself is not evil, it is the greed for it that is the sinful act. The Holy Bible reiterates this principle: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” 1 Timothy 6:10 (English Standard Version). In fact, money is a gift from God; it is a tool to be used by mankind for the purpose of simplifying the exchange for a good and/or service. However, like any tool, money can be used for evil purposes. Rodney Chrisman further explains this as he states, “Virtually no good gift from God has gone uncorrupted by the enemy, and money is certainly no exception.” Is Money Evil? (2010). Unfortunately, the misuse of money occurs on a daily basis, and the greed for more money is never ending. A lot of these large corporations use their money to gain more assets, more money, and more control. This act of itself is sinful. It does not exemplify generosity, the willingness to share, nor does it help a single person in need. When this occurs, it goes against God’s will. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (English Standard Version). The fact that the majority of currency is owned by a few should be worrisome to Christians. However, Christians ought to be concerned of how the majority of the money is being used by these large, multinational corporations.

Forum 3 Module 5

Any corporation being so large or wealthy that it controls too much of anything is not a good thing. This is especially true if limited liability separates ownership and responsibility from control and management. Rodney Chrisman Presentation: Are Corporations Dangerous? Liberty University (February 09, 2018) https://learn.liberty.edu/webapps/blackboard/conte… (last visited November 25, 2020). When these corporations grow to large wealth and control of the market, enjoying all that wealth for those in control during good times but then claim innocence when the corporation finds itself in trouble; retaining their personal wealth and passing on potential liability to shareholders, that becomes an issue. Id. Everyone, not just Christians, should be concerned about holding corporations responsible for the proper handling of business and liability. Yes, from a Christian standpoint this may be even more true as there is an expectation that one should be personally responsible for the decisions they make. Id.

Proverbs 1:19 (NIV) “Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.” When reading this verse and thinking of corporations I imagine decisions made of greed to build the wealth of a corporation. Those who stand to gain financially from those ill decisions usually are the first to claim innocence by way of limited liability, as a means to retain their personal wealth. Those who have invested in the corporation, however; stand to lose assets while they truly are innocent. It would seem these roles should certainly be reversed.
