Palm Beach State Week 2 Domestic and Gender Violence in Society Research

Palm Beach State Week 2 Domestic and Gender Violence in Society Research

Question Description

It’s very important to described a research study

  • Read the Learning Resources on conducting a literature review. Pay particular attention to how reviewing the literature can help you build on and refine your research problem.
  • Read the Learning Resources on theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Think about the differences between the two and how each might guide a quantitative or qualitative study.
  • Review your prior Week’s Discussion on a quantitative and qualitative research problem, purpose, and research question. Given the additional literature you have read about your research problem, consider how you might build on and refine it.
  • Identify a specific psychological or sociological theory or specific aspects of a conceptual framework that guide your quantitative and qualitative scenarios. Depending on the context of each scenario, the same specific theory or specific aspects of a conceptual framework could guide both scenarios.

To help identify a specific theory visit:

  • Alignment of scenario elements is important. See the Examples of Aligned and Misaligned Scenarios document, which can be downloaded from the Week 2 Learning Resources area of the classroom.
  • Discussion posts are pass/fail but have minimum criteria to pass. See the Discussion Rubric, found in the Learning Resources, to ensure you understand the pass/fail criteria.

Assignment

Repost, or build on or refine as needed, your Week 1 Discussion using the following headings and according to the italicized instructions given for each element:

Quantitative Research Question: Typically, this is a 1-sentence question unless you have more than one research question.

Theory or Conceptual Framework: Identify a specific psychological or sociological theory or specific aspects of a conceptual framework that guides that guides the scenario. Briefly describe how the specific theory or conceptual framework guides your research question and will aid in interpretation of results.

Qualitative Research Problem: Complete the following sentence: The scholarly community does not know…

Qualitative Research Purpose: Typically, this is a 1-sentence statement addressed by completing the following sentence: The purpose of this qualitative study is…

Qualitative Research Question: Typically, this is a 1-sentence question unless you have more than one research question.

Theory or Conceptual Framework: Identify a specific psychological or sociological theory or specific aspects of a conceptual framework that guides the scenario. Briefly describe how the specific theory or conceptual framework guides your research question and will aid in interpretation of results. These are examples of the assignment the teacher sends

Program of Study: Teaching Psychology

Social Problem: There is currently a lack of knowledge of the use of essential oils for counselor self-care, in particular stress management.

Quantitative Research Problem: The scholarly community does not know the extent to which stress levels will differ between those counselors who use essential oils compared to those counselors who do not use essential oils to manage their stress levels.

Quantitative Research Purpose: The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the extent of difference between stress levels in those counselors who use essential oils to manage their stress versus those counselors who do not.

Quantitative Research Question: What is the extent of difference between stress levels in those counselors who use essential oils to manage their stress versus those who do not?

Theory or Conceptual Framework: The theory that guides this scenario is called The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. I will use this framework to guide my research question because it is based on the core assumption that a person who is faced with a stressful event will make a coping effort, defined as, “actual strategies used to mediate primary and secondary appraisals.” (Utwente, p.50). Using this theoretical framework, relaxation techniques are used for improving a person’s mood, in my specific study the relaxation techniques being used are essential oils. I will assess whether the counselors who use the relaxation technique of essential oils find it to be an effective coping strategy for stress reduction compared to those counselors who do not use essential oils for stress reduction. (Utwente, 2017)

Qualitative Research Problem: The scholarly community does not know how essential oils contribute to counselors’ stress levels.

Qualitative Research Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify counselor’s experiences with different essential oils and map their experiences to their stress levels.

Qualitative Research Question: How do counselors describe their experiences with different essential oils in regards to their stress level?

Theory or Conceptual Framework: I will use the same theory as described in the Quantitative section, which is the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. This theoretical framework analyzes coping strategies in specific categories. The category that I will use is called emotion-focused coping strategy. Through primary research, by interviewing counselors, I will explore their experiences with essential oils as an emotion-focused coping strategy. (Utwente, 2017)

Example 2

Program of Study: Educational Psychology

Social Problem: According to the Autism Society (n.d.), one of the most important issues that children and adolescents with autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face is making and maintaining friends. Although there are many strategies readily available for children and adolescents to read, such as A Friend’s Guide to Autism (Autism Speaks, n.d.), there is a lack of strategies for parents and teachers that could potentially help children and adolescents with autism or ASD who lack the autonomy to create friendships for themselves.

Quantitative Research Problem: The scholarly community does not know the extent to which teacher-implemented strategies, like peer buddies in which a neurotypical peer is matched up with a child with ASD, will influence the development of friendships among neurotypical peers and children with ASD in a preschool setting.

Quantitative Research Purpose: The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the extent of difference in the development of friendships among neurotypical peers and children with ASD in a preschool setting at which teachers implement peer buddies versus a preschool setting in which the teacher does not implement peer buddies.

Quantitative Research Question: What is the extent of difference in the development of friendships among neurotypical peers and children with ASD in a preschool setting at which teachers implement peer buddies versus a preschool setting in which the teacher does not implement peer buddies?

Theory or Conceptual Framework: The Ben Franklin Effect (Jecker and Landy, 1969 as cited by ChangingMinds.org, n.d.) states that people like others more when they do a favour for them. This theory fits and guides the research question expecting differences in friendship development between neurotypical peers and children with ASD in preschool settings with peer buddies versus preschool settings that do not have peer buddies and will inform the interpretation of the results.

Qualitative Research Problem: The scholarly community does not know what classroom experiences influence the development of friendships among neurotypical peers and children with ASD.

Qualitative Research Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify classroom experiences that contribute to the development of friendships among neurotypical peers and children with ASD in preschool classrooms.

Qualitative Research Question: What are the classroom experiences that contribute to the development of friendships among neurotypical peers and children with ASD in preschool classrooms?

Theory or Conceptual Framework: Murstein (1970, as cited by ChangingMinds.org, n.d.) speaks of the Stimulus-Value-Role model in which states that we select of friends by first evaluating the physical attributes of a person, then we determine if our values are comparable, and finally, we participate in activities that build the relationship. The three stages will help to identify experiences which contribute to the development of friendships among the given populations and will guide the coding of the classroom observations. Lastly, it will aid in the interpretation of results.
