Briefly describe the impact of health insurance on access to care and health outcomes
Health insurance is used to help with medical bills due to conditions such as injuries and illnesses. Having good quality and access to all-inclusive health care services is very imperative as it maintains health, keeps track of disease, and preventative measures, decrease disabilities, early death, and promote health equity for all (“Access to health services | Healthy people 2020,” 2020). Three steps to help achieve access to health outcomes entail having insurance coverage, available and accessible healthcare service locations, and finding physicians whom one can trust and communicate personal experiences with (“Access to health services | Healthy people 2020,” 2020). Having access to care influences ones psychological state and quality of life. Health insurance is great for those who have coverage and can afford the premiums but there are many barriers for many individuals, which include expensive cost for care, no insurance plans, and lack of availability of services or culturally competent care.
Is a reliance on employer-based health insurance plans ideal for the individual, health care providers, employers, and society?
Most employer-based health insurances carry high deductible health plans. HDHPs emphasize that the deductibles within the plan carry high deductibles that must be met by the enrollee before the plan is required to pay on their behalf. This plan also provides as an incentive so that individuals do not overuse the healthcare system and choose affordable treatment options (Teitelbaum & Wilensky, 2016). This type of employer-based health insurance plan is ideal for employers and others as a way to save money. Moreover, there are adverse selection plans where individuals select plans that are pertinent to their needs based on the severity of ones illness. Many individuals who have preexisting conditions tend to look for a more robust health plan, while those who are healthier opt for cheaper plans. Employer-based health insurance plans are selected based on the choices of the employee keeping allocative and production efficiency in mind. Health care providers do their best at keeping services affordable but public and private policymakers make the decisions on the overall goods, and services provided to society when associated with healthcare.
Should the federal government have a more prominent role in providing health insurance?
The federal government is busy with many responsibilities, but more focus is needed on providing affordable, sustainable health insurance to individuals. There is no universal health coverage in the United States, and it is estimated to be 27.5 million individuals who have no healthcare coverage since 2018 (“How does universal health coverage work?” 2020). Medicaid and Medicare are universal health coverages but both plans come with many exceptions to the rules and in my opinion individuals on these healthcare plans do not get fair treatment, as they are limited full access to good physicians, and are provided generic products and services. The Affordable Care Act was a good start to providing health insurance coverage to individuals and through this Act, more than 20, million Americans gained healthcare coverage.
Explain and defend your positions with evidence, and recommend a policy action that aligns with your position.
Instead of having so many different healthcare plans and putting individuals in different buckets, specific challenges should be viewed, and insurance coverages and plans should be made fair across the board to all. I know this would be challenging because the bottom line is all about dollars and cents. Present-day many Americans now have healthcare insurance but the coverages within the plans are crappy. Changes in healthcare coverages need new models and the focus should be on providing good quality care and services to individuals instead of looking at what one is worth based on the coverages of their healthcare plan.
