Growing up, we were not allowed to say the word fart. We had to use the words stinker, poof, let one, stepped on a frog, saw a barking spider, cut the cheese, and a bunch of other euphemisms for a natural bodily function. The act itself never received a reprimand, but yell, “Mom, Chathi farted!” and she’d slap our face. lol Still, to this day, my mother frowns on any of us who use the word. I gave my teenage nephew a birthday card that had a kitten farting rainbows on it, and my mom just about had a heart attack. He loved it.
You may have seen mention of how language used in history textbooks has shaped how we treat African Americans. One Twitter thread mentions we need to change language in middle and high school textbooks as current language sugar coats the horrors. (????????)
I am not a fan of euphemisms. Yes, it has put me in many uncomfortable positions, but I stand by my policy. =)
George Carlin (1937-2008) was a comedian who did quite a bit of comedy about the English language. I loved his flip-board skits and his routine on the 7 words you can’t say on television. As with most comedians, I don’t agree with all of his messages, but I do enjoy his stance on soft language.
This performance is quite a few years old. (????????) Carlin speaks out a lot about “soft language’ and it’s detriment to society. I have edited his performance to remove some offensive language and examples.

Here are some talking points:
- Are you a fan of euphemisms?
- Are you bothered by people using correct terminology? Does it depend on what it is?
- If you use them, is it only with certain people?
- Do you use euphemisms with these people because of your culture/upbringing or theirs?
- Can you think of a situation where you ruined a first impression because you did or didn’t use a euphemism?
- I’ve got tons. =D
