Robert Smithson, Frederick Law Olmsted and the Dialectical Landscape
Smithson examined photos of the land set aside to become Central Park and saw the wasteland that New Yorkers had created with no value or regard for the land. He challenged the idea that Central Park was no longer relevant to a city that was constantly growing and evolving. Comparing Central Park to national parks out west such as Yellowstone & Yosemite, Smithson discusses how the more humble and degraded sites offer more of a challenge to art. An excellent point is made in that theres no reason to recycle wilderness the way Central Park was recycled – you can’t improve wilderness, all that’s needed are access routes and accommodations. Smithson determines that “We cannot take a one-sided view of the landscape within this dialectic. A park can no longer be seen as ‘a thing-in-itself,’ but rather as a process of ongoing relationships….the park becomes a ‘thing for us’.
Brit Fischer, Artists at Work: Marjetica Potr?
Based in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Berlin, Marjetica Potr? is a conceptuaI artist/architect who thinks outside of the box because she’s not linked to an institution. Potr? believes, while physical space is extremely important, it doesn’t need to be considered in the abstract. She emphasizes the actual site, the physical location of place and believes people who want to be recognized in society need a place to achieve this. This interview was conducted 9 years ago, long before the pandemic spread across the globe. Potr? then said it was about community space verses public space. She felt that people craved stronger, smaller communities even if they were living within a big metropolis. Even with social distancing, people are even more dedicated to their family, their neighbors and their community. Today, travel is discouraged so its one’s immediate surroundings that matter and connect one another. Potr?’s artwork and projects emphasize individual empowerment and consider strategies for the future. She references community gardens as a way people connect – exchanging vegetables as well as knowledge. The pandemic has made this truer than ever and may be the blueprint for our future.
