SWOT is an acronym that stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, & Threat. In Learning Activity #3, you will pull together a SWOT analysis of your company, or a public organization of your choice (e.g. Apple, Facebook, etc.) and detail the organizations strengths and weaknesses, and growth opportunities through improvements. Also, SWOT analysis takes into account external threats that could damage its long-term survival.
The main objective of a SWOT analysis is to assess the organizations health while taking into account external factors and to balance both over time.
Steps in the approach a SWOT Analysis:
Step 1 – SWOT analysis involves the collection and evaluation of key data. The data assesses the organizations capabilities, once data is collected it is analyzed.
Step 2 – Data on the organization is collected and sorted into 4 categories: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Strengths and weaknesses stem from internal factors within the organization, while opportunities and threats usually come from external factors.
Step 3 – Develop a SWOT matrix, 3 key points per quadrant
Step 4 Incorporate the SWOT analysis into the decision-making process
to determine which immediate need fits into the long term strategic plan.
Analysis Section: once you have completed your SWOT analysis, write a paragraph on the results and what you believe is the correct course of action for the selected organization.
