Paper 4: Job Application Documents (Resume and Cover Letter)
For your final paper, you will compose and upload two separate documents: 1) Cover Letter, and 2) Resume.
[Compared to the other paper’s you’ve written this semester, these documents are very short. But make not mistake about it, attention to detail is absolutely crucial here. This won’t take as long as those other papers, but it will demand your full attention.
**Before you begin, read all of the attached document titled “ENC 1102 Paper 4 Job Application Documents (online).” That is a step-by-step breakdown and explanation of the initial research, preparation, and directions for this assignment, which I made especially for you, this Spring 2020, for which we are finishing the semester in the online/remote learning setting. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU READ THIS DOCUMENT VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING. It contains all the steps I would have taught you in the face-to-face classroom and which we would have completed in class during the final couple weeks of the semester. This is not a difficult process, but it is extremely important that you follow it closely and don’t simply try to wing this paper an hour before it’s due. It’s an easy A but ONLY IF you follow the directions carefully and methodically and do NOT try to BS this, as it will be obvious and you will not do well on it. For example, do not simply turn in an old resume you have already written on your own, for a job application or for another class. The whole point is to do it this way, which I describe in detail, step by step in the attached document called “ENC 1102 Paper 4 Job Application Documents (online).”
After you read and follow the step-by-step process explained in that document, return here to make sure you’ve got everything in order and follow these last directions below this before you submit your 2 files for this assignment.
1) COVER LETTER:
For your cover letter, look at the model with explanatory notes on the final page of the attached .PDF called “ENC 1102 cover letter example and resume stuff”. For making sure your structure is good, use the MS Word document called “MS Word cover letter template”
Don’t forget to address it to the company of the job for which you’re applying (google for the company’s address). If you can’t find a specific person, say “Dear Hiring Manager:” or “Dear ___(company’s name)_____ Representatives:” etc. Just don’t ever say “To Whom It May Concern.”
And don’t forget to add the line about the company’s mission statement. Find that statement of their website and, in your last paragraph (like the second sentence), write “I would be honored to help fulfill your company’s (or organization’s) mission of ____________(paraphrase or use almost the same words as the company’s mission statement)_____________________________.”
You can make the second and third paragraphs each be about a job or volunteer experience, if you feel like you haven’t had enough academic training yet. Whatever the case, in each of those paragraphs, be sure to elaborate on the specific ways in which one job or experience has helped you develop TRANSFERABLE skills that relate to the job you’re applying for. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE LANGUAGE OF THE JOB AD, and use the attached templates to help you with those sentences.
For examples for organizing your Resume, follow the attached word doc template as a guide (“MS word resume template”). You do not need to include the brief paragraph at the top of the resume, which is often called a “summary.” To make formatting it VERY easy, just download the attached word file called “MS word resume template” and fill it in with your information, and the bullet points you’ve written, based on the types of skills/experience from your work and/or volunteer and/or extracurricular history that you are showing to be transferable to the skills/experience mentioned in the job advertisement/description you’re using for this assignment. In other words, fill in those bullet points with your information that follows the directions I explain for writing them in the handout “ENC 1102 Paper 4 Job Application Documents (resume and cover letter).”
**The other attached .pdf document called “Resume Templates (ENC 1102)” contains a sample resume on page 1. On page 2, it contains explanations of each part of basically that same resume on page 1.
