Analyze two short persuasive pieces on the same topic. Which author is more convincing or sets down a better overall argument and why?
Due date: Monday, December 14th, before 11:59 pm.
Based on our rhetorical discussion of Kristofs essay (see Barnet, Bedau, & OHara pp. 182-184) and the accompanying sample student rhetorical analysis of it (see pp. 188-192), which writer (see the two brief op-eds on driverless vehicles) is more successful at persuading his or her readers and why? Your analysis must also address why the other writers argument is less successful, meaning you must analyze both articles in your essay.
Also review modules 7, 8, & 9 from earlier in the semester. Especially useful are the checklists on pages 181, 191, and 126 in your textbook– Barnet, Bedau, & OHara.
Divide your essay into an introduction, body, and brief conclusion (see below).
Offer a focused introduction that presents both article titles, the names of their writers & their expertise/credibility, the publications they are writing in, their topic, their respective positions on this topic, and anything else you believe you need to discuss to create context for the rest of your essay. Then, state YOUR analytical thesis regarding which writer you believe is more successful at persuading his or her readers and broadly say why that is so.
For the body, develop 3-4 paragraphseach with its own narrow and arguable POINT sentencewhere each paragraph focuses on developing a singular direction of analysis (that is, where you choose a single rhetorical technique or strategy to develop per paragraph, producing several well-unified and purposeful body paragraphs). Provide direct support from the two articles to substantiate your rhetorical analysis. Like in essay #2, offer brief, yet occasional quotes to show the authors strategies using their own words. Ive numbered the paragraphs in each op-ed piece so you can use the paragraph numbers in your in text citations.
Offer a brief conclusion that ties together your analysis.
Remember that you must discuss BOTH op-eds in your essay.
