Worms Lab Report Guidelines
You are to write a lab report on the chemotaxis experiment with C. elegans. You used two strains of worms, wild type and an odr-3 null mutant (the gene odr-3 was deleted from the genome). Your introduction should cover the information necessary to introduce the topic of chemotaxis, what odr-3 is and how it relates to chemotaxis, and the chemical that you used for chemotaxis. This does not have to be long but it should go as in depth on the topics as we went in class. This is a good place to get your 2 primary journal articles in.
Your methods should cover chunking the worms onto a plate with their food (bacteria, make sure you are specific about which strain), growth conditions (time and temp), and anything else that helps someone to repeat the experiment. For those online, ask a friend who did this in class for their conditions.
The second part or section of the methods should cover chemotaxis. I need enough detail to be able to repeat the experiment so make sure you are extra careful here. Do not assume I know anything about your experiment. Also include the statistics you used (hint: we covered a stats method in class this semester that works well for this experiment).
In the results, I expect bar graphs, properly labeled lots of detail here with the title a summary of your findings, with error bars. This figure should stand alone from the text (just as the text stands alone from the figure) but cite the figure. This section should have a results sentence (there was or was not significantly more worms at the spot with vanilla (# ±error worms) etc.)
The discussion should summarize the results and then revisit the information you included in the introduction. Did your results match up with what you expected based on your research into chemotaxis and the mutation? Why or Why not? What might you do next? Please do not give me a description of how things went wrong. Error analysis should go in your lab notebook only.
