There are a number of different strategies that we can utilize as we look to advocate for the community we have chosen to design. The key to quality avocation is to have an understanding of the advocacy strategy that we want to utilize, and how that strategy will have an effect on the community. Individual advocacy strategies include a level of self-empowerment, which is consistent with some of the basic ideologies of current mental health professionals (Calley, 2010). There are also community or system levels of advocacy that we will more than likely use to address the concerns of the community that we will working with. For advocacy to be successful at this level, we should first focus on activities that raise awareness to the problem at hand, as well as gathering data pertaining to the situation (Calley, 2010). In our case it would also be a good if were able to form advocacy coalition groups to help to strengthen our voice as an organization (Calley, 2010).
An appropriate advocacy program has an orientation, as does any other program slated to assist the public (Calley, 2010). Advocacy orientation signifies that an individual has the skills to speak up, taking action, and the ability to see things through its completion (Calley, 2010). Advocacy also requires for these individuals to be connected, or in tough with the community they will be serving (Calley, 2010).
