The goal of this extra credit assignment is engage with the impact of deforestation.
This assignment also allows students to consider how the environment of Central Florida, captured by the virtual UCF Arboretum, is similar to the natural environment that early colonial settlers like Columbus would have encountered.
Students are encouraged to consider how populations have moved into regions and influenced both the displacement of indigenous populations and vast forests. So little of the vast original forests of the Caribbean and Southern U.S. remain– and as such the technology we are using to virtually experience the UCF Arboretum has been developed as a method of recording and preserving the remaining forests.

Students can for this extra credit assignment write their own poem, or create a short 1 minute video, or create a collage with a one paragraph description.
