Subject: Research paper on a novel method/approach of processing metallic materials. It can be a materials system of your choice.

Discuss how fundamental parameters (i.e. bonding, crystal structure, defect structure, etc.) translate to processing-structure-property-performance relationships in the novel method or approach you choose to study. Your paper should be mostly a review article, but include critical analysis of theory, equations and their derivations as necessary to explain the uniqueness of the process

Note: The topic of study should be based on the state-of-the-science and grounded in recent scientific literature. The process you choose should be one that is being actively researched, and may or may not be the topic of your own research.

Length: 7 pages single-spaced (including cover page, but excluding references)

References: your paper must have a minimum of five references, preferably journal articles (not Wikipedia, please).

Format: The paper should be similar in format to a technical paper. You should have a title, abstract, introduction/background, results/discussion (connecting the concepts to class information), conclusions/main take-aways, and references.

Items to think about:

1) What are the process’ applications and what novel properties or performance are required for these applications? How to physics and/or mechanics principles transition from the nanoscale phenomena to the meso- and macroscale processability?

2) How was the process discovered, and how do people use it to control the microstructure of metals? In other words, how does the processing affect the physics/mechanics and thus the structure/properties?

3) What property balances are involved in the process (i.e. does the process result in a material that has great conduction properties but poor mechanical, etc.)

4) How could the properties be further improved by modifying the process, and thus the structure at any level?

5) What new insight does your analysis provide?

The presentation should cover the material above and be ~10 minutes total, with about 8 minutes for presenting and 2 minutes for questions. There is no format, but try not to overcrowd your slides.
